Ross Steele AM, Officier de la Légion d’Honneur, is a world-renowned expert on France, honoured in both France and Australia for his work promoting French language and culture, and for his service to tertiary education and his support of the arts.

Among his numerous awards, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia “for service to tertiary education, particularly the promotion of French Language and culture in Australia, and to the community through support for a range of arts organisations.”

He is Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. He has given invited lectures and papers at numerous Universities and Conferences in Australia, France (Visiting Professor at the Université de Paris III), Canada and USA (Harvard, Yale, UCLA, Indiana, Ohio State, SUNY, Vermont). He has written more than thirty books on France, French language and culture, and has travelled extensively in France.
